Navigating Between Fields on a Page    

  1. One way that using the Tab key is useful is when you enter data into a field that has a Lookup button associated with it.

    Navigate to the Edit Address page to view a field with a Lookup button.

    Click the Address History tab. [ go ]
  2. Click the Edit Address link. [ go ]
  3. Click in the State field. [ go ]
  4. When working with a field that has a Lookup button (represented by the magnifying glass) associated with it, you either use the Lookup button to search for a valid value or type a value directly into the field. When you type a value in the field and press the Tab key, the field description will automatically populate.

    Enter the desired information into the State field. Enter "CA". [ go ]
  5. Press [Tab]. [ go ]
  6. Notice that the description, California, is populated next to the field.

    Click the OK button. [ go ]
  7. Navigate to the Job Data component to see another use of the Tab key.

    Click the Job Data link. [ go ]
  8. When you press the Tab key to navigate out of a field, in many cases it automatically populates other fields on the page. This can make the data entry process more efficient.

    Enter the desired information into the Position Number field. Enter "10000000". [ go ]
  9. Press [Tab]. [ go ]
  10. Notice that the Company, Department, Location, and Reports To fields were automatically populated. [ go ]
  11. Click the Job Information tab. [ go ]
  12. When you enter a new page, the cursor is placed in the first field on the page. You can click into the other fields, tab to the other fields, or use a combination of clicks and tabs to navigate within the page.

    In this example, the cursor is in the Planned Exit field.

    Press [Tab]. [ go ]
  13. Now the focus is on the calendar prompt button next to the Planned Exit field.

    Every page in a PeopleSoft application has a tab order assigned to the fields. It usually represents the most logical way to navigate from field to field on the page. This is another reason why using the Tab key is an efficient way to navigate within a page. It will take you through a logical progression of all the fields on the page.
